According to a recent report, Warner Bros. Games has decided to cancel the planned DLC expansion for Hogwarts Legacy, which had been anticipated to release in 2025. This decision comes amidst broader financial troubles affecting several studios and projects under the company’s umbrella, with the rumored DLC being the latest to be cut as part of Warner Bros. Games’ cost-saving measures.
After the massive success of the 2023 action-RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. Games was eager to expand its offerings within the Wizarding World universe. However, these attempts to build upon the Harry Potter franchise didn’t receive the expected enthusiasm. For instance, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions struggled to maintain interest after its September 2024 launch, and the releases of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus also fell flat that same year. Unfortunately, it appears these challenges have impacted the development of additional Hogwarts Legacy content, which is no longer moving forward.
Back in March 2025, a Bloomberg report revealed that Warner Bros.-Discovery leadership decided to nix the Hogwarts Legacy DLC amid ongoing restructuring efforts at Avalanche Software. The reasoning behind this choice was a belief that the DLC content wasn’t “substantial enough” to justify the projected cost. Additionally, plans for a “Definitive Edition” of Hogwarts Legacy, which would have included the base game alongside the DLC, were dropped. The expansion, being developed in collaboration with Rocksteady Studios, would have revived some cut content from the original game, including a narrative thread centered around a companion character. Fortunately for fans, it’s noted that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is actively being developed at Avalanche Software.
These recent actions by Warner Bros. Games highlight significant cost-cutting strategies the company has been employing recently. For instance, in February 2025, the company called off the much-anticipated Wonder Woman game and closed three studios, including Monolith Productions, the creators of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Reports also surfaced about layoffs at Rocksteady Studios following the lackluster performance of the Suicide Squad game. The restructuring impacts were felt at the top level as well, with negotiations reportedly underway for the exit of Warner Bros. Games’ president, David Haddad, slated for later in 2025.
Though the cancellation of Hogwarts Legacy’s DLC is disappointing news, enthusiasts can still hold out hope that the sequel remains unaffected. Warner Bros. Games has previously emphasized the importance of the fantasy-themed franchise to its long-term strategies, suggesting the sequel’s development is likely still on track.
