Toby Fox, the creative mind behind Deltarune, recently shared some exciting updates about the anticipated Chapters 3 and 4. Slated for a 2025 release, fans have been eagerly awaiting these new chapters since Chapter 2 dropped more than three years ago. Followers of Kris, Susie, and Ralsei’s adventures are itching for the next installment to delve deeper into the enchanting saga.
Deltarune shares much of its DNA with Fox’s celebrated game, Undertale, featuring similar gameplay mechanics and that beloved quirky narrative style spread over a planned total of seven chapters. Since Chapters 1 and 2 made waves in 2018 and 2021, they’ve been lauded for their humor, engaging characters, and Fox’s own magical soundtrack. Back in December 2024, Fox hinted that Chapters 3 and 4 were nearly finished, yet emphasized that bug fixes and translations would require additional time. With these updates, while a specific release date remains elusive, the 2025 launch is still a go.
In a recent BlueSky post, Fox provided more insights into the development of these chapters. Console testing continues, albeit with fewer bugs to tackle. Interestingly, the PlayStation 5 version hasn’t been put through the wringer yet, and efforts are underway to ensure that demo save files can transition smoothly to the full game across consoles—a feature just recently made feasible. While these tidbits might seem unnerving at a glance, Fox reassures fans that a 2025 release is guaranteed.
Come July 2024, Fox revealed that Chapter 4 was already playable but needed some fine-tuning. Notably, the rollout of these chapters will mark a departure from previous releases since they’ll debut on all platforms simultaneously. Earlier chapters first saw the light of day on PC before migrating to consoles. Meanwhile, Chapter 5 is already in the works, with steady progress reported last December.
While Deltarune has its own loyal fanbase, its cultural impact has yet to match the monumental success of Undertale, which continues to captivate players nearly ten years after its release. The game’s distinctive battle system, which allows players to engage non-violently, is one key element that has carried over to Deltarune. Fans are eager to see if more elements from Undertale will make an appearance as Fox continues to develop his engrossing RPG project.
