There’s buzz in the gaming community that Ubisoft, the renowned French publisher, is crafting a new battle royale game designed to take on the likes of Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this ambitious project, codenamed Scout, mirrors many elements of Respawn and EA’s popular game, so much so that some of its artwork was once confused as a thumbnail for Apex Legends. Insider Gossip suggests that Scout features characters and mechanics eerily reminiscent of those from Apex Legends, pointing to a competitive edge Ubisoft might be banking on. It seems this game has been quietly brewing for quite some time.
Ubisoft’s strategy appears to be aimed at capturing the audience of Apex Legends, whose player base has reportedly waned—a fact even acknowledged by its publisher, Electronic Arts. One insider disclosed, “The idea is to seize the opportunity presented by Apex’s declining numbers, with Ubisoft executives feeling there’s a niche market ready for another hero-based battle royale.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at breaking into the free-to-play battle royale scene. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, but unfortunately, it didn’t manage to sustain interest and was shuttered just a year and a half later. Adding to recent events, Ubisoft also announced the discontinuation of their shooter XDefiant by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends might find a glimmer of hope, as a revamped 2.0 version is expected to hit the scene sometime after April 2026, potentially offering fresh competition for Ubisoft’s new venture.
