There’s buzzing excitement in the gaming world as rumors swirl about Square Enix potentially gearing up to announce something big for Parasite Eve soon—possibly as early as the February 12 State of Play presentation. For several years, fans have been holding onto hope for a remake or at least a remaster of this cherished horror RPG, which still holds a special place in gaming history nearly three decades after its original release.
Back in 1998, Parasite Eve captured the attention of many when it launched for the PlayStation. Produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mind behind Final Fantasy, the game marked a significant milestone as Square’s first M-rated title. The narrative, which was inspired by a 1995 Japanese sci-fi horror novel, chronicles the riveting journey of Aya Brea, a New York City cop, as she battles against Eve—a woman with a chilling plan to annihilate humanity through spontaneous combustion. With a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack composed by Yoko Shimomura, who also worked on Kingdom Hearts, and its cinematic storytelling, gamers have longed for a revival of this classic. A recent leak has everyone speculating that the wait for such news might soon be over.
Xun, a leaker with a solid reputation on the A9VG forums and sometimes on ResetEra, recently leaked an image pointing to the February 12 airing of the State of Play. Intriguingly, the image’s title, translated to “the hypnotic soprano,” seems to nod towards Parasite Eve’s opera-singing villain. Adding fuel to the speculation, the image (now deleted) displayed a block of tofu with an “e” on it, hinting at Square Enix. While the idea of hearing about a new Parasite Eve project during the State of Play might seem ambitious, the consistent stream of rumors keeps the possibility alive.
Intriguingly, despite the long silence regarding Parasite Eve, Square Enix hasn’t completely overlooked this title. Just back in September 2023, Aya Brea made a surprise appearance in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius during a crossover event. Given the success of recent remasters like the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, many players continue to voice their hopes for Parasite Eve to receive similar treatment.
Right now, Square Enix is busy working on the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, slated for a 2025 release. They’ve also given updates about the smooth progress of Dragon Quest 12, while remaining tight-lipped about Kingdom Hearts 4 since its announcement in April 2022, leaving fans wondering about its development status.
Parasite Eve made its debut on the PlayStation, released on September 9, 1998, and quickly gained a mature audience due to its animated violence and mature themes. Developed and published by Square, the game provides around 10 hours of gripping content that many wish could be revisited with modern upgrades. Whether or not a remake is on the horizon remains to be seen, but the deep-seated love for this game keeps the hope alive among its dedicated fanbase.
