And just like that, a long-standing tradition of avoiding spending actual money on Nintendo Switch Online has come to an end.
One of the more beloved features for Switch users is wrapping up right on the heels of Xenoblade Chronicles X’s re-release, and there’s another feature that unfortunately won’t be carried over to the Switch 2.
Nintendo recently revealed that, starting March 25, the My Nintendo Gold program will be discontinued. This program used to give you 1% back in eShop credit from physical first-party releases during their initial year, and a generous 5% back on all digital eShop purchases. There is a bit of a grace period, though. If you snag any physical games released between March 25, 2024, and the final date before their year runs out, you’ll still be eligible. Titles in this window include games from Endless Ocean: Luminous all the way to Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition, but sorry, Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond won’t make the cut.
In related news, Nintendo has updated their support page to clarify that Switch Online Vouchers are not going to be compatible with games for the upcoming Switch 2. For those who are unfamiliar, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers could pick up these voucher pairs for about $99, allowing them to redeem first-party game releases. The good news? These vouchers will still be a viable option for any future releases on the original Switch, keeping titles like Legends Z-A and Prime 4 within reach.
