Just yesterday, iFixit teamed up with Microsoft to offer official repair parts for Xbox Series and Xbox Series X consoles, aiming to keep these devices running longer and away from landfills.
This partnership not only features listings for repair parts for both the disc and digital versions of the Xbox Series consoles, but it also offers step-by-step guides for installing each component. Most parts are priced between $20 and $60, yet it turns out that a few critical pieces, like the motherboard assembly, can be as steep as the price of a brand-new console. For instance, the US motherboard assembly for the Series S (model 1883) is priced at $299.99, which matches the cost of a new Series S console. Meanwhile, the Series X (Disk Drive Model 1882) motherboard assembly is tagged at $599.99, surprisingly more than a full Xbox Series X console, which is priced at $499.99.
It’s puzzling that these prices rival or even exceed those of purchasing a new console, which also includes a controller and comes with a one-year warranty. Replacement parts for accessories, like controllers, come at a high price too. An Xbox Series S/X controller motherboard hits $29.99, about the same as buying a new Xbox wireless controller on sale.
Unless you have a rare collector’s edition console to repair, opting for a new Xbox motherboard seems more expensive and challenging than purchasing a new Xbox entirely. Thankfully, other repair parts are more affordable, but the high motherboard cost is indeed shocking. On the bright side, iFixit offers replacement parts for Xbox Series controllers, a step beyond just console components as seen with previous Xbox models.
Liz Chamberlain, iFixit’s Director of Sustainability, expressed enthusiasm about working with Microsoft to extend the life of Xbox consoles. “Since launching our Surface parts collaboration with Microsoft last year, we’ve been aiding customers in self-repairing their Microsoft laptops and tablets. It’s thrilling to offer Xbox owners the same chance,” she remarked.
iFixit’s dedication to simplifying electronic repairs for users is commendable. Recently, we gave the iFixit Fixhub Portable Soldering Station a 4-star review, applauding its outstanding soldering performance, large battery, precise power application, repair ease, and USB-C connectors.
We can envision console repair experts snapping up this soldering station to utilize alongside the new official Xbox replacement parts available through iFixit. However, there are also more budget-friendly options to dive into soldering than such a premium portable station. Notably, iFixit’s guides will be just as effective with or without their branded repair tools.
