FromSoftware is mulling over the idea of introducing a 2-player co-op option in Elden Ring Nightreign, addressing the requests of many fans. Currently, the game only lets players dive in either alone or with a party of three.
Junya Ishizaki, the director of Elden Ring Nightreign, opened up about this potential change, saying that the team at FromSoftware is “considering” this option. When Nightreign was first unveiled, excitement was through the roof, largely because its predecessor, Elden Ring, is hailed as one of the best video games ever. Therefore, expectations are high for Nightreign to offer just as thrilling an experience.
However, some of the initial buzz took a hit as more details about Nightreign came to light. The shift to a 3-day structured gameplay, resembling a roguelike with pre-set classes, raised eyebrows among fans who loved the original’s expansive open world and character-building freedom. Adding to their concerns was the limit imposed on co-op play, allowing only groups of three, effectively ruling out the possibility for just two people to team up.
Naturally, these restrictions didn’t sit well with the community. Many fans were puzzled by the exclusion of a 2-player option. In an interview with Ungeek, Ishizaki addressed these concerns and hinted that the team is now “considering” a duos mode. While nothing is set in stone, it’s a positive sign that fan feedback is being heard.
Most players will have to wait until May 30 to experience Nightreign, but a select few have a chance to test it out during this weekend’s invite-only Network Tests. Despite some connectivity hiccups, initial responses appear to be largely favorable. It’s possible that feedback from these tests will shape some final tweaks before the game’s official launch, although we’ll have to wait and see.
While there’s no designated duos mode in Elden Ring Nightreign at present, players can still team up with a friend, leaving the third spot open for a random participant.
Nightreign represents a bold move by FromSoftware, and it’ll be intriguing to see how well it performs. Some choices, like omitting the beloved character Torrent and forgoing a 2-player co-op mode, have sparked controversy, but the game still promises to deliver a fresh yet familiar experience to FromSoftware enthusiasts. Time will tell if it resonates with fans once it hits the shelves on May 30.
