After experiencing the exceptional Silent Hill 2 remake by Bloober Team, I’m more than willing to trust them when it comes to crafting horror games. Their upcoming project, Cronos: The New Dawn, has already caught my attention, showcasing a captivating aesthetic and evoking those eerie, gruesome Dead Space vibes.
The game’s co-directors, Wojciech Piejko and Jacek Zięba, have openly shared their creative inspirations for Cronos. They drew from John Carpenter’s iconic film, The Thing, the mysterious German series Dark, and Terry Gilliam’s cult classic, 12 Monkeys. In addition, they’ve looked to games like Dead Space and Dark Souls for influence. Cronos shares certain characteristics with Dead Space, featuring horrifying human mutations as enemies, an over-the-shoulder shooting perspective, and a limb-severing mechanic. However, Piejko emphasizes that Bloober Team approaches dismemberment differently than Visceral Games did.
Following the cinematic reveal trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn last October, Piejko and Zięba recently unveiled some gameplay specifics in a new developer diary released by Bloober Team on Thursday. They introduced us to the game’s protagonist, known as the Traveller. This character, who they compare to a deep-sea diver venturing into the depths of time, is tasked with delving into the remnants of human society to rescue survivors. The game unfolds in an alternate-reality world struck by an event called the Change, which in the lore, shattered our world back in the 1980s.
Having worked on Bloober Team’s previous titles, Observer and The Medium, Piejko and Zięba bring a wealth of experience in sci-fi and psychological horror to the table. Cronos: The New Dawn marks a fresh, original venture for Bloober, as the team also collaborates with Konami on their next project.
