The stress test for Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 8 is kicking off, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Larian Studios is using this opportunity to quietly rectify an accidental early release of the update on the PS5 that occurred last night, in a move reminiscent of a Penguins of Madagascar ‘You didn’t see anything’ moment.
Last year, Larian announced that Patch 8 would be the final significant update for BG3. This hefty patch introduces crossplay, a photo mode, and 12 exciting new subclasses. Players can look forward to exploring roles like the College of Glamour bard, bladesinging wizards, and drunken master monks, among others.
For those interested in participating in the stress test, registration opened back in December. By now, you should know if you’ve been selected and can dive in to try out crossplay if you made the cut. PC and PS5 gamers should have received emails from Larian containing their game codes and instructions for accessing the test. Meanwhile, Xbox users who registered via the Xbox Insider Program should find the necessary application available through the Xbox Insider Hub.
The official Baldur’s Gate 3 Twitter recently shared details about the Patch 8 stress test going live, along with highlights of the patch, tips for hosting cross-play lobbies, and information on known issues. Notably, split-screen will soon be available on Xbox Series S.
Larian has thoughtfully put together a video guide for setting up cross-play, suggesting that console players should host the sessions if they plan to play with friends on a PC. As for PC players with mods, the recommendation is to ensure the host uses fewer than 100 mods, all tagged as ‘Available on Mac and Console.’
For those who downloaded Patch 8 on the PS5 by mistake due to a mix-up involving Larian’s partners during the stress test launch in certain regions, you’ll need to return to Patch 7. This means a complete uninstall and reinstall of BG3 is necessary. Sticking with the accidental update could result in ruined new saves, problematic mods, and possible performance issues. It’s likely not worth the hassle just to sport the ‘early adopter’ badge.
While waiting for the proper release of Patch 8, you won’t be left twiddling your thumbs. There’s an intriguing interview with some BG3 modders to dive into. They’re working on an ambitious custom campaign with hopes of sharing a playable demo later this year. Stay tuned and keep those adventurous spirits high!
