Bungie has officially unveiled Marathon, its highly anticipated extraction shooter, offering fans an exciting first look at the gameplay. Set to launch for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on September 23, 2025, this game is already stirring up quite the buzz.
In Marathon, players will take on the role of Runners — these are cybernetic mercenaries each equipped with their own unique abilities. You and your team, which can include up to three players, will need to navigate the game’s intense environment filled with hostile AI security forces and opposing Runner teams. Along the way, you’ll gather an array of weapons, implants, and equipment. If you manage to survive these challenging encounters, the gear you collect is yours to keep for future escapades.
Imagine this: you and a couple of friends land in a zone, racing against time and enemies to snag as much loot as possible, then make it out alive. Not only will you face aggressive AI security, but you’ll also have to outwit and outgun other Runner teams. For those seeking an added level of challenge, you can opt to go it alone, taking on entire teams by yourself and making a solo run for all the loot.
Above, you can find the Marathon Gameplay Reveal Trailer to get a glimpse of what’s in store. We’ve also included a more detailed Gameplay Overview Trailer down below. Though it’s still early in the game’s development, what we’re seeing so far is promising!
While the official release may still be a while off, eager gamers won’t have to wait too long to get a taste. Marathon is hosting a Closed Alpha that kicks off on April 23rd. If you’re interested in participating, just head over to the official Marathon Discord to sign up.
