It’s not uncommon these days to hear about games that never make it to launch, and now it seems PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. is joining that list. This one had a distinct Ultra Man vibe but didn’t give us much to go on.
Thinking back, Project G.G. was announced in 2020, but after that initial tease, it disappeared from the radar. Things took a more serious turn when Hideki Kamiya, the game’s director and a co-founder of the studio, left at the tail end of 2023. Naturally, people wondered what this meant for the game’s future. Taking a browse through PlatinumGames’ website now, you’d see 10 titles prominently featured—a lineup that includes major hits like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and even the freshly unveiled Ninja Gaiden 4.
But here’s the kicker. If you roll back using the Wayback Machine, you’d discover that their list once boasted 22 games. In addition to recent headliners, it included licensed games like Transformers: Devastation and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and even one-time solo endeavors like Madworld. Despite some not-so-stellar outings like Babylon’s Fall, these titles still have separate pages even if they’re no longer showcased on the site—props to Eurogamer for pointing this out. Interestingly, Project G.G. not only got dropped from that list, but its page vanished entirely. Now, its URL just loops you back to the PlatinumGames homepage.
This pretty much seals the deal on its fate. Without Kamiya at the helm for over a year, it was only a matter of time before the ax fell. The chaotic churn at PlatinumGames lately offers a hint at what they’ve been navigating internally. Still, with the Ninja Gaiden project on the horizon, it seems they’ve managed to keep things afloat for the near future.
