You can dive into Fortnite on various platforms: PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. The mission right now? Face off against Godzilla and live to tell the tale!
Lately, my feelings towards Fortnite have become a bit tangled. I can’t help but reminisce about its glory days during that remarkable first year. Back then, the absence of bots meant every match thrust players, skilled or otherwise, into an unpredictable whirlwind of chaos, humor, and missed victories. Now, that exhilarating chaos has faded away. In its place, we’re left with matches primarily filled with bots. These AIs put on a feeble show of aggression, almost as if presenting themselves for an easy takedown. The once mysterious narrative threads, left open to our interpretations, are now just MMORPG-style quests with verbose characters narrating the predictable lore. Each week, more characters from well-known franchises flood the item shop, erasing the unique identity Fortnite once had and transforming it into something reminiscent of the commercial world imagined in Ready Player One.
Nonetheless, I can’t completely resist Fortnite’s lure. It remains a game where the physical world feels tangible under your virtual feet. I thoroughly enjoy the smooth mechanics enabling you to sprint, slide, jump, and scale the landscape. After a tough day, the urge to hop on quickly, complete three daily quests, and rake in some quick XP is a habit that lets me unwind for a while. The game’s grand moments, where it pulls off something astonishing that few others can, still captivate me. Right now is an example of such a moment, with Godzilla—yes, the king of monsters—making appearances in matches. I watched a clip of someone embodying this giant and was blown away by the impressive scale and genuine destructive might it conveys. This weekend, it looks like I’ll be diving back into Fortnite more than I usually do, eager to witness the enormity of such destruction from the tiny, vulnerable perspective of a human, desperately fleeing something that feels genuinely threatening. So, if you’re roaming the Fortnite map this weekend, turn into Godzilla, and spot me darting around below, be kind! I come in peace! — Carolyn Petit
