Some of us can’t help but be drawn to games that offer the thrill of exploration. Many of these games tend to fall under the sci-fi category, which makes sense—after all, the genre is practically tailor-made for creating a sprawling array of worlds to explore. But there’s always a fine line to walk with these titles. Nobody wants to spend endless hours flying through a galaxy void of any real content, no matter how vast it is. Conversely, we dread the prospect of a universe crammed with pointless side quests designed solely to pad out gameplay. However, when developers strike the perfect balance, we’re in for an epic ride. Enter Cubic Odyssey, our subject of interest today, which promises to take us on just such an adventure.
Developed by Atypical Games and published by Gaijin Entertainment, Cubic Odyssey kicks off with a bang as you crash-land your craft on an unfamiliar planet. From this rocky start, you’ll need to gather resources, refine them, and construct everything from basic tools to elaborate vehicles and outposts. Your ultimate objective? Building starships, which will open up the whole galaxy for exploration.
In Cubic Odyssey, every twinkle in the night sky represents a star system loaded with various explorable worlds. Each world hosts its own ecosystem and dynamic day-night cycles. You’ll find NPC-packed cities, pirate outposts, and treacherous ruins ripe for exploration. The game’s overarching mission tasks you with defeating the Red Darkness, a sinister force that corrupts wildlife, consumes planets, and jeopardizes every living being across the galaxy.
The game boasts seamless transitions between ground, air, and space travel. As a player, you’ll execute warp jumps between star systems and race from one planet to the next. On land, you can navigate alien terrain on speeders and even wander through subterranean ruins on foot. It’s designed to adapt to however you wish to experience it.
For those who prefer not to venture solo, Cubic Odyssey offers an optional co-op mode. Team up with other players to tackle colossal enemies, unleash orbital strikes, or construct massive cooperative bases. There should be plenty of thrilling adventures to share with friends.
“We intend to build a boundless open world where every planet, every system, and every moment is yours to shape,” says Andrei Lopata, CEO of the Bucharest-based Atypical Games.
If you’re the type who revels in having a never-ending list of tasks to accomplish and your heart races at the mere thought of space, Cubic Odyssey seems poised to deliver a massive dose of fun. Expected to land on PC, PS5, and Xbox S/X later this year, make sure to keep an eye out for more details on this intriguing title as its release date approaches.
